Every county has a jail and every state has prisons. Contact the chaplain, or the person in charge of programming if that is someone other than the chaplain, to have a discussion about providing a weekly program. They will understand “Bible study” more easily than “spiritual growth class” but they will probably not imagine what Circle of the Word actually has to offer, so be prepared to give a clear, simple description. You will probably be required to have a background check and you may need references. They will tell you their processes for clearing volunteers and managing security. Getting in and out of a detention setting can be complicated, but it’s not much different than managing security measures at an airport. Be patient and follow the rules in good cheer. Take advantage of any training that may be offered. Consider it all a learning experience preparing you for mission work.
